Sustainability

Sustainability and self sufficiency is at the core of what we do here at Pongwe Eco Lodge. It is our philosophy we strongly believe at for the future.

We harvest rain water to the underground water tanks and we also have a ground water well.  Fresh water is the most precious resource we have. The rain water harvesting system was one of the first things built here on the land and since its installation we have not had to rely on anything else. It is used for washing as well as for watering our plants.

Many hotels rely on bringing water in on trucks, which require an amazing amount of fuel … we rely on nature and gravity.

As with the water we try to rely on nature also with the energy. Some of the rooms have solar power colectors and our garden lights are all solar powered.

These will therefore continue to work even in the event of power cuts, which are very common here on Zanzibar. Still we do not have a generator here at the lodge for obvious environmental reasons.

At this time we can also  provide storm lanterns but we suggest to enjoy those calm moments, sitting quiet with the soft light of a flame, and watching bush-babies. This can be an utter delight.

Plan a little, keep a power bank charged and make use of the power when it is available.

Our organic garden provides us with a growing amount of fruit and vegetables. At the moment we grow papayas, passionfruits, mangold, tomatoes…

Bit by bit we are developing this kitchen garden further and hope to grow as many different species as possible right here on the land.

Fresh, home grown fruits and vegetable will be available to guests.
