“This was the first house I built here in Pongwe that´s why it has a very special place in my heart. And that is also the reason why I have named the house KWANZA as it means “first” in Swahili.

Using locally sourced mango and pine wood, it was an absolute pleasure to build. And I learned so much during the construction of this little home.

I wanted to create a feeling of an inside garden using mostly  green and brown colors and enhanced it with just a vibrant detailed touches.  And comming along with our philosophy I have used as many natural, recycled or reclaimed  materials as possible.”

“EMBE, which means Mango in Swahili, was the 2nd house I built, using as much locally sourced mango wood as possible.

Mango wood is a very sustainable resource and in my opinion is one of the best options for furniture and decorative purposes. The traditional sailing boats (Dhows) are also made using mango wood.”

“BUSHBABY = Komba in Swahili. This was the 3rd house constructed and is called bush baby due to all the bush babies that sit on the roof at night.  These sweet nocturnal mammals love bananas and other sweet fruit, and can be heard calling at night in a very distinctive way.
In front of the house is a beautiful Flame tree, also known as a Christmas tree here in Zanzibar, as it flowers with beautiful red flowers around the start of December. This tree was about 30cm tall when I first planted it, and now it has grown incredibly well and provides shade to the terrace.”
